What do you mean by "Old Roblox?"

When I say "old Roblox" I'm referring to the 2008-2013 era, since this is what I grew up with.

Some younger players use "old Roblox" to refer to eras all the way up to 2017! Which isn't a problem per se, though I find it a bit humorous.

I've created this shrine as a throwback to a forgotten fallen angel of the Internet: a magical world of adventure that has since been transformed into a capitalist hellscape.

(I know that sounds pretentious. but it's genuinely how I feel)

What made old Roblox so great?

The magic of old Roblox falls mostly under the same category as the rest of Web 1.0 in my opinion. The game itself wasn't nearly as polished as it is now, but the places had more of a personal charm to them.

I'm not quite sure how to put the sensation into words, so just think of it this way: old places are to a Geocities website what new "experiences" are to a Facebook timeline.

Why does new Roblox SUCK so bad?

Short answer: Greed.

Long answer: I'm not a Roblox expert, but I firmly believe commercialism is the main pitfall of modern Roblox. Ever since they deleted Tix (see section below) players rely solely on Robux for everything. This wouldn't be a problem, if not for the fact that you HAVE to pay for Robux.

There is no way to get free Robux. The free section of the catalog is very limited, and don't even get me started on microtransactions within the "experiences" themselves. The game is effectively pay-to-win in most situations

What were building games?

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who remembers these. I search "old roblox building games" and I just get pictures of the stamper games, which I also played but it was way after this era.

The old building games had more of a free-for-all element to them. You spawned in the world in front of a physical set of various "blocks" that you could copy, drag, etc. to, well, build with.

Since there was no designated areas like in the stamper games, people could build together if they wanted to; however in my experience this just translated to trolls griefing my stuff, and my 5-10 year old ass throwing a tantrum about it 😁

One of my 'log cabins'

One of my favorite things to do was to use the log blocks to build these so-called "log cabins," like the one pictured. No matter how many times it got called ugly (because it was) or got deleted by trolls, I still lived like a king in these luxury mansions 😎

The takeaway here: old building games were great, even with the trolls

Do you remember tickets?

Tickets

Back in the day, Tickets (aka "Tix") were a FREE currency in Roblox. Every time you logged in, you would receive a certain amount of Tix, and after logging in every day for a while you'd have enough Tix to buy stuff. All without a single cent of real life money!

Robux was a thing, and implemented quite similar to how it is now. But due to it being only obtainable through real money, it was used mostly for limiteds and otherwise really valuable stuff.

On April 14, 2016, Roblox made potentially their worst mistake by removing Tix from the game. As I described above, this means that now Robux is the only way to buy anything in Roblox, which means you have to give them real money. It should be obvious why this is completely ridiculous, and serves as a final nail in the coffin for what I consider "old Roblox."
